Documentation is absolutely critical, and not just for the sake of having a written record, but also as a personal reference for future as well. I can't tell you how many times I have had the experience of digging in to an old file from a year or two past and thinking to myself, "thank goodness I documented this clearly!"This is useful when there are repeat requests or, groundwork that has already been done for a new one.
I get that people find documentation dry sometimes, but putting in the investment in documenting goes a long way! Likewise, my life got much easier while working with documented projects.
